In societies all over the world today, people, ideas, sub-cultures, and mainstream cultures are in constant flux. This is because of the inter-connected nature of the world today. One consequence of this is that the identities of people and societies are becoming increasingly plural and complex. In reaction, groups within societies try to establish what's important to them as the defining traits.
